Top 10 Amitabh Bachchan Performances Pre Millenium

This is an extremely personal list. I think KAALA PATTHAR will be higher on the list. Also LAAWARIS is due for a re-watch. These sorts of lists are always hard to make as there are just SO many movies…..
1) ANAND (1971): This easily ranks as one of Amitabh Bachchans most unassuming performances to date. Completely natural to the core, Amitabh held his own against a Superstar like Rajesh Khanna in a tailor-made, leading role and left a lasting impression as the silent, soulful and searing Dr. Bhaskar Bannerjee aka Babu Moshai.


2) DEEWARR (1975): The height of perfection is how I describe DEEWAR and Amitabh’s Vijay Verma. A movie that has stood for so much over the years, and redefined the realms of Bollywood cinema to no end. A film that is richly layered in symbolism and metaphor’s with dialogues that are through and through classics. Amitabh’s character was based on the character of Haji Mastan, and Bachchan slipped in to his rebellious part with complete relish. This was no dout a further extension of the “angry young man” persona, however unlike ZANJEER Amitabh was on the other side of the fence, playing to gallery with his tour-de-force performance.

3) ZANJEER (1973): To say this is a performance(and film) that re-defined Bollywood cinema as it is today would be an understatement. This was THE film that created Amitabh Bachchan’s “angry young man” image which has gone down in the pages of history. Amitabh accepted this role after it had been rejected by countless other stars including Raaj Kumar. As the silent, honest, principled and troubled cop on brimming with a relentless anger and fury Inspector Vijay Khanna is no doubt immortal. The dialogue “yeh police station hai tumhare baap ka ghar nahin” is simply unforgettable….

4) MAJBOOR (1974): This I find one of the most underrated of the Amitabh Bachchan-Salim/Javed films. Unlike most of the other films they’d done together this film required Amitabh to play a “common man” who thinks he has a life threatening disease and takes a unsolved crime upon himself only to realize that he’s not going to die. Fast-paced, relentless, breah-taking and absolutely thrilling with more than a passing nod to Hitchcock and Vijay Anand, this is a film with a extremely convincing and endearing performance from Bachchan. Bachchans chemistry with Pran too is notable here after ZANJEER.

5) CHUPKE CHUPKE (1975): Like ANAND and ABHIMAAN this film again reunited Amitabh with Hrishikesh Mujherjee, and like the other two, again Amitabh isn’t the “centre point” here as such, yet Amitabh shines through in a comic role which is still used as a reference point to this day(SALAAM NAMASTE, HEYY BABYY). Playing the nervous and sketchy Sinha, Amitabh bought to the fore straight-faced comedy like no other, his ability to maintain a neutral reaction throughout, and taking a joke on himself ensured that this is a performance that connects with the viewer even today. And it was a tough choice between this and MILLI-another Hrishikesh/Amitabh film that released the same year.

6) AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY (1977): Perfect! That’s the only way to describe Amitabh Bachchan’s performance as Anthony Gonsalves. The delivery, mannerisms, and facial expressions are absolutely perfect and Bachchan evokes laughter to no end in one of his most massiest, flamboyant and zinda-dil performances.

7) DON (1978): The perfect masala film, this is how I would describe Don. And who better than the perfect “masala” hero to play the part? Amitabh Bachchan defined style as the cold-hearted Don, and given that he is only on-screen as Don for less than 20 minutes this is no easy feat. His red suit, white shoes or extremely stylish shades matched with an attitude that is simply unbeatable to this date DON remains a cult phenomenon. And offcourse as the village bumpkin Vijay who has to become Don, Amitabh was as usual at his “massy” best. The “paan” industry can never thank Amitabh Bachchan enough….

MUKADDAR KA SIKANDAR (1978): A updated version of DEVDAS, the movie was a tragedy done properly, with class, honesty and depth. Amitabh Bachchan is great as the lead character. I just loved him in this film, from start to finish (the little boy who played the young ‘Sikandar’ was wonderful too). Sikandar is at heart a good (even noble) man, but yet is a deeply flawed character, who feels deeply but is completely unable to express it. He’s been hardened by his life, but he still has a very soft core, which few get to see. The scene at Memsahib’s birthday celebration (when she’s older), when Sikandar comes in with her precious gift, is breathtaking. It’s a haunting echo of the experience Sikandar had at her ‘younger’ birthday party. A beautifully nuanced performance, definitely one of the Big B’s best.

9) SHAKTI (1982): The clash of the titans, Dillip Kumar Versus Amitabh Bachchan. The debates, on-going for life as to who had the upper-hand. And while I would love to get in to a discussion on that, I for once don’t wanna be side-tracked. In any case, Amitabh clearly stood his own against a titan like Dillip Kumar, and surprisingly often over-shadowing him(nuff said).

10) AGNEEPATH (1990): Now here is a film that pays a homage and a tribute to everything Amitabh Bachchan’s “angry young man” stands for. Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is a name that is synonymous with Bollywood history, and Amitabh’s viscerally mindblowing performance is one that touched heights that other actors can only dream of. The aura, magnitude, presence, style and sheer power of delivery….

A notable mention to a few films that didn’t make it on the list but came close in the countdown. First is SHOLAY(1975); and as much as I love this film to bits, I can always find other Amitabh Bachchan performances that easily like better, SHOLAY was a film that goes beyond JUST Amitabh, it was a film where EACH and EVERY character was sincerely perfect in their parts from head to toe, and yes, Amitabh’s heroic performance remains etched in viewers minds to this date, it’s not one I would include in my top 10.

KAALA PATTHAR (1979); this is one that has appeared on my earlier top 10 lists, yet over time I found the impact of this performance somewhat jaded compared to the others on the list. Yes it’s still a deeply affecting performance and Amitabh is tremendous here but for now it remains bumped down a few notches.

MR. NATWARLAL (1979); this is easily my guiltiest pleasure of all time. A movie I can watch over and over again, and one that I visit easily once every 2 months. Amitabh Bachchan’s sheer mass-appealing power is simply unmatchable here.

LAAWARIS (1981); like SHARAABI which came later, this isn’t a Bachchan film I’m a huge fan of, however this is a performance that is truly fabulous in every sense. Playing the “naajayaaz aulad”, Amitabh played a street-smart lawaris with extreme sincerity, and offcourse his classic “Mere Angne Mein” is simply priceless.
