The hottie shares his marriage plans with us in an exclusive interview




Tall, gorgeous and drop dead handsome – John Abraham is all these things and much more. He smiles his characteristically crooked smile, stretches catlike into a divine stretch and laughs at and with us in the most charming manner possible. Dressed in his signature jeans and tee combo, the actor is a delight from the moment we say hello. He doesn’t shirk away from the candid questions we daringly pose at him and what’s more, he opens up about every nuance of his much-discussed personal life. There is nothing we don’t absolutely adore about our tête à tête with John

Deepika and you looked great on screen in your last release Desi Boyz. Do you have plans of working together in the future?
I know that Deepika and my chemistry is beautiful on screen since we also get along very well off it. I don’t know whether we will work together in the future. I have two films this year – I, Me Aur Main in January, a movie along the lines of Wake Up Sid, and Housefull 2.

What other movies do you have lined up?
Both my next releases enhance the ‘Action Abraham’ moniker I have been given. There is Race 2 and then there is one of my favourites – Shootout at Wadala – which I am really looking forward to. Manya Surve’s character is something that I look, eat and breathe every day.

Shootout At Wadala sounds amazing. Tell us about the preparation that you are putting in for the role...
For Shootout at Wadala, Sanjay (Gupta) has done unbelievable research. We message each other every day not only about Manya Surve, but about other characters too. I have learnt a lot about Mumbai during 1980-1982. It is amazing to go back to a different world. We are trying to be as authentic as possible about that period. Sanjay also wants me to sing a song in the film.

So are you concentrating on action films?
I want to do more action as after Dhoom, people kept asking me why I haven’t done more. Force released alongside 13 releases and still got the biggest opening which shows that people like to see me in this avatar. I have never discussed ACP Yashwardhan with Nishikanth (Kamat) but I would love to do Force 2 and 3 as it is
a great brand.

Do you feel formula films work?
I am shocked that I am saying this but yes, formula works at the BO. Whenever I have experimented, I have failed – be it No Smoking, Kabul Express, Jhootha Hi Sahi and Aashayein. Karan Johar laughs at me and says, ‘John, you have such a ‘commercial’ face and body – do a commercial film and you will succeed.’
I feel an actor should try and experiment within the mainstream space, like I did in Dostana which worked well! If I do a No Smoking, am I expecting it to work? Looking at current trends, the answer is a ‘no’.

But on a personal note, I would like to do No Smoking part two because I feel good as an actor doing such films. Anurag Kashyap is obviously a rock star of a director.

Is it true that Anurag approached you for Bombay Velvet?
He spoke to me about that film ages ago, now he is busy with something else. We speak every week about working together. For instance, Kabir (Khan) is doing Ek Tha Tiger that doesn’t feature me. There is no compulsion to work with me; most directors have that free-flowing equation with me. Milan Luthria is a good friend. I am sure Milan and Kabir will work with me again – it’s just a matter of time.
