Indian-Canadian hockey film Breakaway breaks box office records


Breakaway, a film about a team of Indian hockey players in Toronto, has smashed box office records, according to its co-producer Akshay Kumar.
“Breakaway is now the highest-grossing Canadian English movie in 2011 in Canada as it has struck a chord with foreign audience looking for stories they can connect with,” Kumar told the Times of India in an article that appeared Thursday.
The film was co-produced by Kumar alongside Canadian actor and director Paul Gross. Set in Toronto, it follows the story of a young Sihk boy who is ridiculed on the ice. To fight back, he and his friends form a team called the “Speedy Singhs” and try to make it to the finals despite his own father’s disapproval. The film stars celebrated Canadian comedian Russell Peters, as well as Rob Lowe, Vinay Virmani and Camilla Belle.
Breakaway has also set the record for highest grossing cross-cultural film in Canada, making over $1. 8 million. It broke the record previously held by Indian-born Canadian director Deepa Mehta’s final installment in her elements trilogy, Water. It also surpassed Bollywood hits like 3 Idiots which made $1.1-million in Canada.
